Uwaga 5: Emulsja w / o jest czasami nazywana emulsją odwrotną. Określenie "odwrotna emulsja" wprowadza w błąd, sugerując nieprawidłowo, że emulsja ma właściwości przeciwne niż emulsja. Dlatego jego stosowanie nie jest zalecane. Emulsją jest mieszanina dwóch lub więcej cieczy, które są normalnie nie mieszające się. Emulsje są częścią bardziej ogólnej klasy układów dwufazowych materii zwanej koloidami.
