Ewalowalność definiuje się jako zdolność systemu ewolucyjnego. Ewolucją jest zdolność populacji organizmów do nie tylko generowania różnorodności genetycznej, ale także generowania adaptacyjnej różnorodności genetycznej, a tym samym ewoluowania poprzez dobór naturalny. Aby organizm biologiczny mógł ewoluować przez dobór naturalny, musi istnieć pewne minimalne prawdopodobieństwo, że nowe, dziedziczne warianty są korzystne. Oczekuje się, że przypadkowe mutacje, o ile nie występują w sekwencjach DNA bez funkcji, są w większości szkodliwe. Korzystne mutacje są zawsze rzadkie, ale jeśli są zbyt rzadkie, adaptacja nie może wystąpić. Wczesne nieudane wysiłki zmierzające do ewolucji programów komputerowych poprzez przypadkową mutację i selekcję wykazały, że ewolucja nie jest dana, ale zależy od reprezentacji programu. Analogicznie, ewolucja organizmów zależy od ich mapy genotypowo-fenotypowej. Oznacza to, że genomy biologiczne są ustrukturyzowane w sposoby, które powodują, że korzystne zmiany są mniej prawdopodobne niż w przeciwnym razie. Zostało to potraktowane jako dowód, że ewolucja stworzyła nie tylko organizmy fitter, ale populacje organizmów, które są w stanie lepiej ewoluować.
