Hydrangea lub (/ haɪdreɪndʒ (i) ə /, zwyczajowe nazwy hydrangea lub hortensia) jest rodzajem 70-75 gatunków roślin kwiatowych pochodzących z Azji Południowej i Wschodniej (Chiny, Japonia, Korea, Himalaje i Indonezja) i obu Ameryk . Zdecydowanie największą różnorodnością gatunków jest wschodnia Azja, zwłaszcza Chiny, Japonia i Korea. Większość z nich to krzewy o wysokości od 1 do 3 metrów, ale niektóre z nich to małe drzewa, a inne lianas osiągają do 30 m (98 stóp), wspinając się po drzewach. Mogą być zarówno liściaste, jak i wiecznie zielone, chociaż powszechnie uprawiane gatunki umiarkowane są wszystkie liściaste. Po wprowadzeniu na Azory, H. macrophylla jest obecnie bardzo częsta, zwłaszcza na Faial, znanej jako "niebieska wyspa" ze względu na dużą liczbę hydrangeas obecnych na wyspie. Gatunki w pokrewnym rodzaju Schizophragma, także w Hydrangeaceae, są również często znane jako hydrangeas. Schizophragma hydrangeoides i Hydrangea petiolaris są powszechnie znane jako hydrangeas wspinaczkowy. W hydrangeas występują dwa układy kwiatowe. Kwiaty Mophead to duże okrągłe kwiatostany przypominające pomponom lub, jak sama nazwa wskazuje, głowa mopa.
