Hypernova
Hiperbola to rodzaj eksplozji supernowej o energii znacznie wyższej niż supernowa. Alternatywnym terminem dla większości hiperboli jest "supernowa superlekcyjna". Uważa się, że takie eksplozje są źródłem długotrwałych wybuchów promieniowaniem gamma. Podobnie jak supernowa w ogóle, hiperbola wytwarza kilka różnych typów eksplozji gwiezdnych: niektóre dobrze modelowane i obserwowane w ostatnich latach, niektóre jeszcze wstępnie sugerowane dla obserwowanych hipernovae, a niektóre w całości teoretyczne. Zaobserwowano liczne hiperboliny odpowiadające supernowce typu Ic i IIn, a może także co najmniej jeden z typów IIb. Słowo "collapsar", zwrócone do zwiniętej gwiazdy, dawniej było używane do odwoływania się do końcowego produktu gwiezdnego upadku grawitacyjnego, czarnej dziury o gwiazdowej masie. Słowo to jest czasami używane w odniesieniu do określonego modelu upadku szybkoobrotowej gwiazdy, jak omówiono poniżej.
