Półka lodowa
Półka na lód to gruba, pływająca platforma lodu, która tworzy się, gdy lodowiec lub arkusz lodu spływa do linii brzegowej i na powierzchnię oceanu. Półki na lód znajdują się tylko na Antarktydzie, Grenlandii i Kanadzie. Granica między pływającą półką lodową a uziemionym lodem, które ją poddaje, nazywana jest linią uziemiającą. Ten przepływ ciągle przemieszcza lód z linii uziemienia do przedniej strony półki. Głównym mechanizmem utraty masy w lodowych półkach uważano za wylesianie w lodowcach, w którym kawałek lodu odpływa z przedniej strony półki. Badanie przeprowadzone przez NASA i naukowców uniwersyteckich - opublikowane w Science w dniu 14 czerwca 2013 r. - stwierdziło jednak, że wody oceanu topiące spodnie półki lodowcowej na Antarktyce są odpowiedzialne za większość utraty masy lodowej na kontynencie.
