W VII wieku, w Afryce Północnej i na Bliskim Wschodzie, kiedyś część Imperium Rzymskiego Wschodniego znalazła się pod panowaniem kalifatu, imperium islamskiego, po zdobyciu następców Muhammada. Choć istniały znaczne zmiany w społeczeństwie i strukturach politycznych, przerwa w starożytności nie była pełna. Na wschodzie zachowało się nadal dużo Bizantyjskie Imperium, które pozostało w mocy.
