Projekcja Mercatora to cylindryczna projekcja mapy przedstawiona przez geologa flamandzkiego i kartografa Gerardusa Mercatora w 1569 roku. Stała się ona standardową projekcją mapy dla celów morskich ze względu na zdolność do reprezentowania linii ciągłych, zwanych rumbami lub loxodromami, jako prostych segmentów które zachowują kąt z meridianami. Pomimo, że liniowa skala jest równa we wszystkich kierunkach wokół dowolnego punktu, zachowując w ten sposób kąt i kształty małych obiektów, projekcja Mercatora zniekształca rozmiar i kształt dużych obiektów, gdy waga wzrasta od równika do bieguna, gdzie staje się nieskończony.
