Nucleoid
Nukleoida jest nieregularnie ukształtowanym obszarem wewnątrz komórki prokariota, który zawiera cały lub większość materiału genetycznego. W przeciwieństwie do jądra komórki eukariotycznej, nie jest ona otoczona membraną jądrową. Genom organizmów prokariotycznych jest ogólnie okrągły, dwuniciowy fragment DNA, którego wiele kopii może istnieć w dowolnym momencie. Długość genomu różni się znacznie, ale generalnie jest co najmniej kilka milionów par zasad. Podobnie jak we wszystkich organizmach komórkowych, długość cząsteczek DNA chromosomów bakteryjnych i archaologicznych jest bardzo duża w porównaniu do wymiarów komórki, a cząsteczki DNA genomowego muszą być zagęszczone.
