Paraldehyd jest cyklicznym trimerem cząsteczek acetaldehydu. Formalnie jest pochodną 1,3,5-trioksanu. Odpowiednim tetramerem jest metaldehyd. Bezbarwna ciecz, jest słabo rozpuszczalna w wodzie i bardzo rozpuszczalna w alkoholu. Paraldehyd powoli utlenia się w powietrzu, brąz staje się i wytwarza zapach kwasu octowego. Szybko reaguje na większość tworzyw sztucznych i gumy. Paraldehyd został po raz pierwszy zsyntetyzowany w 1829 przez Wildenbusch. Ma zastosowanie w przemyśle i medycynie.
