Przyimek i postpozycja
Przyimki są gramatycznie odrębną klasą słów, której większość członków centralnie wyraża stosunki przestrzenne lub czasowe lub służy do zaznaczania różnych funkcji składniowych i funkcji semantycznych. W tym, że podstawowa funkcja jest relatywna, przyimek zwykle łączy się z innym składnikiem w celu utworzenia frazy prefalskiej, odnoszącej się do uzupełnienia kontekstu, w którym występuje frazę. Słowo wstępne pochodzi z łaciny, języka, w którym takie słowo jest zazwyczaj umieszczane przed jego uzupełnieniem, więc jest ono "wstępnie ustawione". Angielski jest kolejnym takim językiem, choć nie ma wymogu, aby przyimek poprzedzał uzupełnienie. W wielu językach słowa z tą funkcją gramatyczną pojawiają się, a nie wcześniej, uzupełnienie. Takie słowa są wtedy powszechnie nazywane postpisami. Podobnie obwód składa się z dwóch części, które pojawiają się z każdej strony komplementu. Terminem technicznym używanym do odwoływania się do przyimków, postpozycji i okólników jest adposition. Niektórzy językoznawcy używają słowa "przyimek" zamiast "adposition" dla wszystkich trzech przypadków.
