Prostaglandyna
Prostaglandyny to grupa hormonopodobnych związków lipidowych, pochodzących enzymatycznie z kwasów tłuszczowych i mających ważne funkcje w ciele zwierzęcym. Każdy prostaglandyn zawiera 20 atomów węgla, w tym pierścień 5-węglowy. Są mediatorami i mają wiele silnych efektów fizjologicznych, takich jak regulowanie skurczu i złagodzenia tkanki mięśni gładkich. Prostaglandynami nie są hormony endokrynologiczne, ale autocrine lub parakryna, które są lokalnie działającymi cząsteczkami komunikatora. Różnią się one od hormonów, ponieważ nie są produkowane w określonym miejscu, ale w wielu miejscach całego ciała. Ponadto komórki docelowe znajdują się w bezpośrednim sąsiedztwie miejsca ich wydzielania. Prostaglandyny, wraz z tromboksanami i prostacyklinami, tworzą klasę prostanoidową pochodnych kwasów tłuszczowych, podklasę eikozanoidów. Skrótem dla "prostaglandyny" jest PG; specyficzne prostaglandyny są nazwane literą, po której następuje liczba. Na przykład prostaglandyną E1 jest skrótowo PGE1 lub PGE1, a prostaglandyna I2 jest skrótem PGI2 lub PGI2.
