Księga przypowieści (hebrajski מִשְלֵי, Míshlê (Shlomoh), "Przysłowie (z Salomona)"), jest drugą książką trzeciej sekcji (zwanej Pismami) hebrajskiej Biblii. W tłumaczeniu na język grecki i łacina tytuł przybierał różne formy: w greckiej Septuagint (LXX) stał się "Παροιμίαι = Paroimiae" ("Proverbs"); w łacinie wulgaty tytuł "proverbia", od którego pochodzi nazwa angielska. Przysłowie to nie tylko antologia, ale "kolekcja zbiorów" odnosząca się do wzoru życia, które trwało ponad tysiąc lat. Jest przykładem biblijnej tradycji mądrości i rodzi pytania o wartości, zachowanie moralne, sens ludzkiego życia i właściwego postępowania. Powtarzającym się tematem jest to, że "strach przed Bogiem (czyli poddanie się woli Boga) jest początkiem mądrości". Mądrość jest chwalona za rolę w tworzeniu; Bóg przejął ją przed wszystkimi, a przez nią dał rozkaz chaosowi; a ponieważ ludzie mają życie i dobrobyt, dostosowując się do porządku tworzenia, poszukiwanie mądrości jest istotą i celem życia zakonnego.
