Istnienie tak wielu matematyków występuje, ponieważ Guru lub potomkowie linii Shankaracharya mieli wielu uczniów. Może to doprowadzić do rozgałęziań z instytucji macierzystej. Możliwe jest również, że Guru mógłby umrzeć, nie nazwając następcy, prowadząc do powstania rywalizujących grup. Na przykład matematyka Jyotira Math i Govardhan zerwali linię, a później wzbudzili.
