Tragacanth jest naturalną żywicą otrzymaną z wysuszonego surowca kilku gatunków roślinożerii środkowo-wschodniej rodzaju Astragalus, w tym A. adscendens, A. gummifer, A. brachycalyx i A. tragacanthus. Niektóre z tych gatunków są znane wspólnie pod wspólnymi nazwami "koziego cierń" i "locoweed". Guma jest czasami nazywana gumą shiraz, shirazem, gumą wybraną lub gumą.
