Głowa i tył tej ryby mają kolor ciemnobrązowy z zielonkawym odcieniem. Brzegi mają słaby srebrzysty odcień o zmroku, a brzuch jest biały. Słabo znane są również w amerykańskim indyjskim imieniu "Squeteague". W państwach środkowoatlantyckich ryba jest czasami określana nazwą pstrąga morskiego, choć nie jest związana z rybami właściwie określanymi pstrągami, które należą do rodziny Salmonidae.
