Bonsai to sztuka przekształcania miniaturowych drzew w dekoracyjne wazony. Sztuka Bonsai wymaga od swoich praktykujących sadzenia określonych gatunków drzew w małych doniczkach, kontrolowania ich plam i komponowania naturalnej formy gałęzi, gałązek, liści, a nawet ich łuków zgodnie z pożądanym stylem. Technika ta nie polega na barwieniu hormonów ani na stosowaniu hormonów, ponieważ nie wiąże się bezpośrednio z genetyczną modyfikacją drzewa. Wysokość bonsai wynosi zwykle 120-140 centymetrów i jeśli przekracza ten rozmiar, nie jest już uważana za drzewo bonsai, ale jest klasyfikowana jako drzewo ozdobne. Słowo "bonsai" w języku japońskim pochodzi od chińskiego słowa "penzai", które oznacza drzewo w pojemniku. Bonsai to połączenie dwóch słów, np.
