Um ácido é uma substância química cujas soluções aquosas são caracterizadas por um gosto amargo, a capacidade de transformar o tornado azul vermelho e a capacidade de reagir com bases e certos metais para formar sais. As soluções aquosas de ácidos têm um pH inferior a 7. Um pH inferior significa uma maior acidez e, portanto, uma maior concentração de íons de hidrogênio na solução. A definição de Brønsted-Lowry é uma expansão: um ácido é uma substância que pode atuar como um doador de prótons.
