O Congresso Nacional Africano é o partido político governante da República da África do Sul, apoiado por sua Aliança Tripartite com o Congresso dos Sindicatos Sul-Africanos e o Partido Comunista Sul-Africano, desde o estabelecimento da democracia multi-racial em abril de 1994. Ele se define como uma "força disciplinada da esquerda". Os membros fundaram a organização como o Congresso nacional nativo sul-africano em 8 de janeiro de 1912 na Igreja Waeshoek Wesleyan em Bloemfontein para aumentar os direitos da população negra da África do Sul. John Dube, seu primeiro presidente, e o poeta e autor Sol Plaatje estavam entre seus membros fundadores. A organização tornou-se o ANC em 1923 e formou uma ala militar, o Umkhonto we Sizwe em 1961. Foi o partido no poder da África do Sul pós-apartheid a nível nacional desde 1994. Aumentou a sua maioria nas eleições gerais sul-africanas. Aumentos adicionais em 2004, com 69,7% dos votos. Em 2009, a sua quota de votos reduziu ligeiramente, mas manteve-se o partido dominante com 65,9% dos votos, e diminuiu novamente em 2014 quando obteve 62,15%.
