Antibióticos
Um antibiótico é um agente que mata ou inibe o crescimento de um microorganismo. O termo antibiótico foi utilizado pela primeira vez em 1942 por Selman Waksman e seus colaboradores em artigos de revistas para descrever qualquer substância produzida por um microorganismo que seja antagônica ao crescimento de outros microorganismos em alta diluição. Esta definição excluiu substâncias que matam bactérias, mas que não são produzidas por microorganismos. Também excluiu compostos antibacterianos sintéticos, como as sulfonamidas. Muitos compostos antibacterianos são moléculas relativamente pequenas com um peso molecular de menos de 2000 unidades de massa atômica. Com avanços na química medicinal, a maioria dos antibacterianos modernos são modificações semi-sintéticas de vários compostos naturais. Estes incluem, por exemplo, os antibióticos beta-lactâmicos, que incluem as penicilinas, as cefalosporinas e os carbapenem. Os compostos que ainda estão isolados de organismos vivos são os aminoglicosídeos, enquanto que outros antibacterianos - por exemplo, sulfonamidas, quinolonas e oxazolidinonas - são produzidos unicamente por síntese química.
