Um ARN de transferência é uma molécula adaptadora composta de ARN, tipicamente de 73 a 94 nucleótidos de comprimento, que serve como ligação física entre a sequência de nucleótidos dos ácidos nucleicos e a sequência de aminoácidos das proteínas. Ele faz isso transportando um aminoácido para a maquinaria sintética de proteínas de uma célula conforme indicado por uma sequência de três nucleotídeos em um ARN mensageiro. Como tal, os tRNAs são um componente necessário da tradução de proteínas, a síntese biológica de novas proteínas de acordo com o código genético. A sequência de nucleótidos específica de um mRNA especifica quais aminoácidos são incorporados no produto proteico do gene a partir do qual o ARNm é transcrito, e o papel do ARNt é especificar qual sequência do código genético corresponde a qual aminoácido. Uma extremidade do tRNA corresponde ao código genético em uma sequência de três nucleótidos chamada anticodon. O anticodon forma três pares de bases com um codão no mRNA durante a biossíntese da proteína. O mRNA codifica uma proteína como uma série de codões contíguos, cada um dos quais é reconhecido por um tRNA particular. Na outra extremidade do ARNt é uma ligação covalente ao aminoácido que corresponde à sequência anticodon.
