Arminius
Arminius, também conhecido como Armin ou Hermann, era um chefe dos germanos Cherusci que derrotou um exército romano na Batalha da Floresta de Teutoburgo. A influência de Arminius manteve uma coalizão aliada de tribos germânicas em oposição aos romanos, mas depois de derrotas pelo general romano Germanicus, sobrinho do imperador Tiberius, sua influência diminuiu e Arminius foi assassinado sob as ordens de chefes germânicos rivais. A vitória de Arminius contra as legiões romanas na floresta de Teutoburg teve um efeito de grande alcance sobre a história subseqüente dos antigos povos germânicos e do Império Romano. Os romanos não deveriam fazer mais tentativas concertadas de conquistar e manter permanentemente Germania além do rio Reno.
