Bakelite
Bakelite, ou poli (hidrogenodroxibenzilmetilenglicol), é um plástico inicial. É uma resina de fenol formaldeído termoendurecível, formada a partir de uma reação de eliminação de fenol com formaldeído. Foi desenvolvido pelo químico belga Leo Baekeland em Nova York em 1907. Um dos primeiros plásticos feitos de componentes sintéticos, a baquelite foi utilizado para a sua não-condução elétrica e propriedades resistentes ao calor em isoladores elétricos, invólucros de rádio e telefone e tão diversos produtos como utensílios de cozinha, jóias, caules, armas de fogo e brinquedos infantis. O Bakelite foi designado como marco histórico nacional histórico químico em 1993 pela American Chemical Society em reconhecimento de sua importância como o primeiro plástico sintético do mundo. O recurso "retro" dos antigos produtos Bakelite os tornou colecionáveis.
