O deslocamento bathocromico é uma alteração da posição da banda espectral na absorção, reflectância, transmitância ou espectro de emissão de uma molécula para um comprimento de onda mais longo. Como a cor vermelha no espectro visível tem um comprimento de onda maior do que a maioria das outras cores, esse efeito também é comumente chamado de mudança vermelha, embora esse uso seja considerado informal e não tenha relação com a mudança Doppler ou outros significados independentes do comprimento de onda do deslocamento para o vermelho. Este uso é freqüentemente encontrado na literatura científica.
