Bee-eater
Os bee-eaters são um grupo de aves de quase-passerina na família Meropidae. A maioria das espécies são encontradas na África e na Ásia, mas outras ocorrem no sul da Europa, Austrália e Nova Guiné. Eles são caracterizados por plumagem ricamente colorida, corpos esbeltos e geralmente penas de cauda central alongadas. Todos têm contas curtas e asas pontiagudas, o que lhes dá uma aparência de andorinha quando visto de longe. Existem 26 espécies diferentes de abelhas. Como o nome sugere, os comedores de abelhas predominantemente comem insetos voadores, especialmente abelhas e vespas, que são apanhados no ar por sallies de um poleiro aberto. Enquanto perseguem qualquer tipo de inseto voador, predominam as abelhas em sua dieta. Os himenópteros compreendem de 20% a 96% de todos os insetos comidos, com abelhas que compõem aproximadamente um terço dos Hymenoptera. Antes de comer sua refeição, um apicultor retira o ferrão batendo repetidamente e esfregando o inseto em uma superfície dura. Durante este processo, a pressão é aplicada ao inseto, extraindo assim a maior parte do veneno.
