O benchmarking é o processo de comparação dos processos de negócios e das métricas de desempenho com as melhores práticas da indústria ou as melhores práticas de outras indústrias. As dimensões normalmente medidas são qualidade, tempo e custo. No processo de benchmarking de melhores práticas, o gerenciamento identifica as melhores empresas em sua indústria ou em outra indústria onde existem processos semelhantes e compara os resultados e os processos dos estudados com os próprios resultados e processos. Desta forma, eles aprendem o quão bem os objetivos executam e, mais importante, os processos de negócios que explicam por que essas empresas são bem-sucedidas. O benchmarking é usado para medir o desempenho usando um indicador específico, resultando em uma métrica de desempenho que é então comparada aos outros.
