Benthos é a comunidade de organismos que vivem, dentro ou perto do fundo do mar, também conhecida como a zona bentônica. Esta comunidade vive em ambientes sedimentares marinhos ou próximos, de arvores de maré ao longo da orla, para a plataforma continental e, em seguida, até as profundezas abissais. Muitos organismos adaptados à pressão da água profunda não podem sobreviver nas partes superiores da coluna de água. A diferença de pressão pode ser muito significativa. Como a luz não penetra na água oceânica muito profunda, a fonte de energia para os ecossistemas bentônicos profundos é, muitas vezes, matéria orgânica do mais alto na coluna de água que desce até as profundezas. Essa matéria morta e decadente sustenta a cadeia alimentar bentônica; a maioria dos organismos na zona bentônica são agentes de destruição ou detritivores. O termo benthos vem do nome grego βένθος "profundidade do mar". O Benthos também é usado em biologia de água doce para se referir a organismos no fundo de corpos de água doce, como lagos, rios e riachos.

Benthos is the community of organisms which live on, in, or near the seabed, also known as the benthic zone. This community lives in or near marine sedimentary environments, from tidal pools along the foreshore, out to the continental shelf, and then down to the abyssal depths. Many organisms adapted to deep-water pressure cannot survive in the upper parts of the water column. The pressure difference can be very significant. Because light does not penetrate very deep ocean-water, the energy source for deep benthic ecosystems is often organic matter from higher up in the water column which drifts down to the depths. This dead and decaying matter sustains the benthic food chain; most organisms in the benthic zone are scavengers or detritivores. The term benthos comes from the Greek noun βένθος "depth of the sea". Benthos is also used in freshwater biology to refer to organisms at the bottom of freshwater bodies of water, such as lakes, rivers, and streams.
