Jorge Francisco Isidoro Luis Borges, KBE (espanhol: audio (ajuda · info), 24 de agosto de 1899 - 14 de junho de 1986) foi um escritor, ensaísta, poeta e tradutor argentino nascido em Buenos Aires. Seu trabalho abraça o "caráter de irrealidade em toda a literatura". Os seus livros mais conhecidos, Ficciones (Fictions) e The Aleph (El Aleph), publicados na década de 1940, são compilações de histórias curtas interligadas por temas comuns, incluindo sonhos, labirintos, bibliotecas, espelhos, escritores de ficção, filosofia e religião. As obras de Borges contribuíram para a literatura filosófica e também para o gênero de fantasia. O crítico Ángel Flores, o primeiro a usar o termo realismo mágico para definir um gênero que reagiu contra o realismo dominante e o naturalismo do século XIX, considera o início do movimento como o lançamento da História Universal da Infâmia de Borges (Historia universal de a infâmia). No entanto, alguns críticos considerariam Borges como um antecessor e não como um realista mágico. Os seus poemas tardios dialogam com figuras culturais como Spinoza, Camões e Virgil.
