Boris I da Bulgária
Boris I, também conhecido como Boris-Mikhail e Bogoris, foi o Knyaz do Primeiro Império Búlgaro em 852-889. Na época do seu batismo em 864, Boris recebeu o nome de Michael depois de seu padrinho, o Imperador Michael III. O historiador Steven Runciman chamou-o de uma das maiores pessoas da história. Apesar de uma série de contratempos militares, o reinado de Boris I foi marcado com eventos significativos que moldaram a história búlgara e eslava. Com a cristianização da Bulgária, a tradicional religião do estado do Tengismo foi abolida. Um habilidoso diplomata, Boris, explorei com sucesso o conflito entre o Patriarcado de Constantinopla e o Papado para garantir uma igreja búlgara autocefálica, lidando com as preocupações da nobreza com a interferência bizantina nos assuntos internos da Bulgária. Quando, em 885, os discípulos dos santos Cirilo e Metódio foram banidos da Grande Morávia, Boris entrei refúgio e providenciei ajuda para desenvolver o alfabeto e a literatura eslava. Depois de abdicar em 889, seu filho mais velho e sucessor tentou restaurar a antiga religião pagã, mas foi deposto por Boris I.
