Em matemática, números cardinais ou cardeais de curto, são uma generalização dos números naturais usados para medir a cardinalidade dos conjuntos. A cardinalidade de um conjunto finito é um número natural - o número de elementos no conjunto. Os números cardinais transfinitos descrevem os tamanhos de conjuntos infinitos. A cardinalidade é definida em termos de funções bijetivas. Dois conjuntos têm a mesma cardinalidade se e somente se houver uma bijeção entre eles. No caso de conjuntos finitos, isso concorda com a noção intuitiva de tamanho. No caso de conjuntos infinitos, o comportamento é mais complexo. Um teorema fundamental devido a Georg Cantor mostra que é possível que conjuntos infinitos tenham cardinalidades diferentes e, em particular, a cardinalidade do conjunto de números reais é maior que a cardinalidade do conjunto de números naturais. Também é possível que um subconjunto adequado de um conjunto infinito tenha a mesma cardinalidade que o conjunto original, algo que não pode acontecer com subconjuntos adequados de conjuntos finitos.
