Um sistema de coordenadas cartesianas é um sistema de coordenadas que especifica cada ponto de forma exclusiva em um plano por um par de coordenadas numéricas, que são as distâncias assinadas do ponto a duas linhas diretas perpendiculares fixas, medidas na mesma unidade de comprimento. Cada linha de referência é chamada de eixo de coordenadas ou apenas de eixo do sistema, e o ponto onde eles se encontram é a sua origem, geralmente em par ordenado. As coordenadas também podem ser definidas como as posições das projeções perpendiculares do ponto nos dois eixos, expressas como distâncias assinadas da origem. Pode-se usar o mesmo princípio para especificar a posição de qualquer ponto no espaço tridimensional por três coordenadas cartesianas, suas distâncias assinadas para três planos mutuamente perpendiculares. Em geral, n coordenadas cartesianas especificam o ponto em um espaço euclidiano n-dimensional para qualquer dimensão n.
