A Era Cenozóica é a atual e mais recente das três eras geológicas de Phanerozoic, seguindo a Era Mesozoica e cobrindo o período de 66 milhões de anos até o presente. O cenozóico também é conhecido como a Era dos Mamíferos, porque a extinção de muitos grupos permitiu que os mamíferos se diversificassem muito. No início do Cenozóico, após o evento K-Pg, o planeta era dominado por uma fauna relativamente pequena, incluindo pequenos mamíferos, aves, répteis e anfíbios. Do ponto de vista geológico, não demorou muito para que os mamíferos e as aves se diversificassem muito na ausência dos grandes répteis que dominaram durante o mesozoico. Alguns pássaros cresceram do que o humano médio. Este grupo tornou-se conhecido como "pássaros terroristas", e eram formidáveis predadores. Os mamíferos chegaram a ocupar quase todos os nichos disponíveis, e alguns também cresceram muito, alcançando tamanhos não vistos na maioria dos mamíferos terrestres de hoje. Com base no clima, a Terra iniciou uma tendência de secagem e resfriamento, que culminou nas glaciações da Época do Pleistoceno e parcialmente compensada pelo Máximo Térmico do Paleoceno-Eoceno.
