Charlemagne
Carlomagno, também conhecido como Carlos o Grande ou Carlos I, foi o rei dos francos de 768, o rei da Itália a partir de 774 e do 800 o primeiro imperador na Europa Ocidental desde o colapso do império romano ocidental três séculos antes. O estado franco expandido que ele fundou é chamado de Império carolíngio. O filho mais velho de Pepin the Short e Bertrada de Laon, Carlomagno tornou-se rei em 768 após a morte de seu pai. Ele foi inicialmente co-governante com a morte súbita de seu irmão Carloman I. Carloman em 771, em circunstâncias inexplicáveis, deixou Carlomagno como o líder incontestável do Reino Franco. Charlemagne continuou a política de seu pai em relação ao papado e tornou-se seu protetor, retirando os lombardos do poder no norte da Itália e levando uma incursão à Espanha muçulmana.
