Marcheshvan, por vezes encurtado para Cheshvan, é o segundo mês do ano civil e o oitavo mês do ano eclesiástico no calendário hebraico. Em um ano regular, Marcheshvan tem 29 dias, mas por causa das regras de adiamento de Rosh Hashanah, em alguns anos um dia adicional é adicionado a Marcheshvan para tornar o ano um ano "completo". Marcheshvan é um mês de outono que ocorre em outubro-novembro no calendário gregoriano. Dado a etimologia akkadiana, parece provável que o מ e o ו tenham sido alternados em algum momento, já que y-r-ḥ é a raiz semítica para "lua" e š-m-n é a raiz semítica para "oito". Desde então, as duas primeiras letras מַר foram reinterpretadas como a palavra hebraica para amargo, aludindo ao fato de que o mês não tem feriados ou jejuns. A comunidade judaica etíope celebra Sigd no dia 29 de Marcheshvan, conforme reconhecido pelo Knesset israelita de julho de 2008. A Bíblia hebraica, antes do exílio babilônico, refere-se ao mês como Bul.
