Christchurch é a maior cidade da Ilha do Sul da Nova Zelândia e a terceira área urbana mais populosa do país. Encontra-se a um terço do caminho até a costa leste da Ilha do Sul, ao norte da Península dos Bancos, que, desde 2006, está dentro dos limites formais de Christchurch. A população da cidade de Christchurch no censo de 5 de março de 2013 era 341.469. A cidade foi nomeada pela Associação Canterbury, que estabeleceu a província vizinha de Canterbury. O nome de Christchurch foi acordado na primeira reunião da associação em 27 de março de 1848. Foi sugerido por John Robert Godley, que freqüentou Christ Church, Oxford.
