Cátodo frio
Um cátodo frio é um cátodo que não é eletricamente aquecido por um filamento. É usado em lâmpadas de descarga de gás, como lâmpadas de néon, tubos de descarga e alguns tipos de tubo de vácuo. O outro tipo de cátodo é um cátodo quente, que é aquecido por corrente elétrica que passa através de um filamento. Um cátodo frio não funciona necessariamente a baixa temperatura: é freqüentemente aquecido à sua temperatura de operação por outros métodos, como a corrente que passa do cátodo para dentro do gás.
