Scoter comum
O scoter comum é um grande pato do mar, de 43-54 cm de comprimento, que se reproduz no extremo norte da Europa e Ásia a leste até o rio Olenyok. O americano / E Siberiano M. americana é às vezes considerado uma subespécie de M. nigra. Invernos mais ao sul em zonas temperadas, nas costas da Europa, tanto ao sul quanto Marrocos. Forma grandes bandos em águas costeiras adequadas. Estes são bem embalados, e os pássaros tendem a decolar e a mergulhar juntos. O ninho forrado é construído no chão perto do mar, lagos ou rios, na floresta ou na tundra. 6-8 ovos são colocados. Caracteriza-se pela sua forma volumosa e grande conta. O macho é preto com uma conta bulbosa que mostra uma coloração amarela ao redor das narinas. A fêmea é um pássaro marrom com faces pálidas, muito parecido com o escote preto preto. Esta espécie pode ser distinguida de outros scoters, além do preto, pela falta de branco em qualquer lugar no drake, e as áreas pálidas mais extensas na fêmea. Esta espécie mergulha para crustáceos e moluscos; Também come insetos aquáticos e peixes pequenos quando em água doce.
