Pinophyta
As coníferas, a divisão Pinophyta, também conhecida como divisão Coniferophyta ou Coniferae, são um dos 12 taxa de nível de divisão existentes dentro do Reino Plantae e 10 dentro das plantas terrestres existentes. Os pinófitos são gimnospermas, plantas de semente cônica com tecido vascular. Todas as coníferas existentes são plantas lenhosas, sendo a grande maioria árvores com apenas alguns arbustos. Exemplos típicos de coníferas incluem cedros, abetos de Douglas, cipreses, abetos, junipers, kauri, larches, pinheiros, hemlocks, sequóias vermelhas, abetos e seixos. A divisão contém aproximadamente oito famílias, 68 gêneros e 630 espécies vivas. Embora o número total de espécies seja relativamente pequeno, as coníferas são de imensa importância ecológica. São as plantas dominantes em vastas áreas de terra, mais notavelmente as florestas boreais do hemisfério norte, mas também em climas legais semelhantes nas montanhas mais ao sul. As coníferas boreais têm muitas adaptações de inverno. A forma cônica estreita das coníferas do norte, e seus membros inclinados para baixo, ajudam a derramar neve. Muitos deles alteram sazonalmente sua bioquímica para torná-los mais resistentes ao congelamento, chamados de "endurecimento".
