O roteiro cuneiforme é um dos primeiros sistemas conhecidos de escrita, distinguido por suas marcas em forma de cunha em comprimidos de argila, feitos por meio de uma cana sem corte para uma caneta. O próprio nome cuneiforme simplesmente significa "em forma de cunha", da "cunha" do cuneus latino e forma "forma", e entrou no uso do inglês, provavelmente, do antigo cunéiforme francês. Emergindo em Sumer no final do 4º milênio aC, a escrita cuneiforme começou como um sistema de pictogramas. No terceiro milênio, as representações pictóricas tornaram-se simplificadas e mais abstratas à medida que o número de personagens em uso diminuiu, de aproximadamente 1.000 na Idade do Bronze Precoce para cerca de 400 na Idade do Bronze Final. O sistema consiste em uma combinação de sinais logófonos, consonânticos alfabéticos e silábicos. O roteiro sumério original foi adaptado para a escrita das línguas akkadiana, eblaita, elamita, hitita, luwiana, sombria, hurria e urartiana, e inspirou os alfabetos ugaris e antigos persa. A escrita cuneiforme foi gradualmente substituída pelo alfabeto fenício durante o Império neo-assírio.
