Dendrímero
Os dendrímeros são moléculas repetidamente ramificadas. O nome vem da palavra grega δένδρον, que se traduz em "árvore". Termos sinônimos para dendrímero incluem arboróis e moléculas em cascata. No entanto, dendrimer é atualmente o termo internacionalmente aceito. Um dendrímero é tipicamente simétrico em torno do núcleo, e muitas vezes adota uma morfologia esférica tridimensional. A palavra dendron também é encontrada com freqüência. Um dendron geralmente contém um único grupo quimicamente endereçável chamado ponto focal. A diferença entre dendrons e dendrímeros é ilustrada na figura um, mas os termos normalmente são encontrados de forma intercambiável. Os primeiros dendrímeros foram feitos por abordagens de síntese divergentes por Fritz Vögtle em 1978, R.G. Denkewalter na Allied Corporation em 1981, Donald Tomalia na Dow Chemical em 1983 e em 1985, e George Newkome em 1985. Em 1990, Jean Fréchet introduziu uma abordagem sintética convergente.
