Na física e na matemática, a dimensão de um espaço ou objeto é informalmente definida como o número mínimo de coordenadas necessárias para especificar qualquer ponto dentro dele. Assim, uma linha tem uma dimensão de uma porque apenas uma coordenada é necessária para especificar um ponto nela. Uma superfície, como um plano ou a superfície de um cilindro ou esfera, tem uma dimensão de dois porque duas coordenadas são necessárias para especificar um ponto sobre ele. O interior de um cubo, um cilindro ou uma esfera é tridimensional porque são necessárias três coordenadas para localizar um ponto dentro desses espaços. Em termos físicos, a dimensão refere-se à estrutura constitutiva de todo o espaço e sua posição no tempo, bem como à constituição espacial dos objetos dentro das estruturas que se correlacionam com as concepções de partículas e campos, interagem de acordo com as propriedades relativas da massa e são fundamentalmente descrição matemática. Estes, ou outros eixos, podem ser referenciados para identificar de maneira exclusiva um ponto ou estrutura em sua atitude e relação com outros objetos e ocorrências. As teorias físicas que incorporam o tempo, como a relatividade geral, funcionam em "espaço-tempo" em 4 dimensões.
