A substituição da moeda ocorre quando os habitantes de um país usam uma moeda estrangeira em paralelo ou em vez da moeda nacional. A substituição da moeda pode ser total ou parcial. A substituição total da moeda ocorreu em países pequenos, principalmente na América Latina, Caribe e Pacífico, que são fortemente dependentes dos Estados Unidos. A substituição parcial da moeda ocorre quando os residentes de um país optam por deter uma parcela significativa de seus ativos financeiros denominados em moeda estrangeira. As principais moedas usadas como substitutos são o dólar dos Estados Unidos, o euro, o dólar da Nova Zelândia, o franco suíço, a rupia indiana, o dólar australiano, o dram armênio, a lira turca, o siclo israelita e o rublo russo.
