Dud
Um fracasso é uma munição redonda ou explosiva que falha em disparar ou detonar, respectivamente, na hora ou no comando. Dispositivos mal projetados (por exemplo, dispositivos explosivos improvisados (IEDs)) e dispositivos pequenos, têm maiores chances de serem deficientes. Duds ainda são perigosos e podem explodir se forem manipulados. Eles precisam ser desativados e descartados cuidadosamente. Em áreas de geleiras, muitos filhos curiosos foram feridos ou mortos por manipulação de tais dispositivos. O termo desce do dudde do inglês médio, que significa "roupa esfarrapada", e estava em uso como um pejorativo geral para algo desgastado ou inútil por vários séculos antes da adoção generalizada da concha de artilharia explosiva fundida. A variação absolutória descreve uma arma nuclear que não explode. (Uma arma nuclear que explode, mas não alcança seu poder esperado, é denominada fizzle). Por extensão, "dud" tornou-se uma palavra gíria para qualquer coisa que não funcione ou seja defeituosa. Há também um doce chamado Dias do leite, assim chamado, porque era impossível fazer com que eles fossem perfeitamente redondos.
