A ecologia é o estudo científico das interações entre os organismos e seu meio ambiente, como as interações que os organismos possuem entre si e com o ambiente abiótico. A biodiversidade, que se refere às variedades de espécies, genes e ecossistemas, melhora certos serviços ecossistêmicos. A ecologia é um campo interdisciplinar que inclui biologia e ciência da Terra. A palavra "ecologia" foi inventada em 1866 pelo cientista alemão Ernst Haeckel.
