Eletroscópio
Um eletroscópio é um instrumento científico inicial que é usado para detectar a presença e a magnitude da carga elétrica em um corpo. Foi o primeiro instrumento de medição elétrica. O primeiro eletroscópio, uma agulha giratória chamada versorium, foi inventado pelo médico britânico William Gilbert por volta de 1600. O eletroscópio de bola-de-pith e o eletroscópio de folha de ouro são dois tipos clássicos de eletroscópio que ainda são utilizados na educação física para demonstrar os princípios de eletrostática. Um tipo de eletroscópio também é usado no dosímetro de radiação de fibra de quartzo. Os eletrocopos foram utilizados pelo cientista austríaco Victor Hess na descoberta de raios cósmicos. Os eletroscópios detectam a carga elétrica pelo movimento de um objeto de teste devido à força eletrostática de Coulomb. O potencial elétrico ou a tensão de um objeto é igual à sua carga dividida por sua capacitância, de modo que os eletroscópios podem ser considerados como voltímetros crus. O acúmulo de carga suficiente para detectar com um eletroscópio requer centenas ou milhares de volts, então os eletroscópios são usados apenas com fontes de alta tensão, como eletricidade estática e máquinas eletrostáticas.
