Glicolise
A glicólise é a via metabólica que converte glicose C6H12O6, em piruvato, CH3COCOO- + H +. A energia livre liberada neste processo é usada para formar os compostos de alta energia ATP e NADH. A glicólise é uma sequência determinada de dez reações catalisadas por enzimas. Os intermediários fornecem pontos de entrada para a glicólise. Por exemplo, a maioria dos monossacarídeos, como frutose e galactose, pode ser convertido em um desses intermediários. Os intermediários também podem ser diretamente úteis. Por exemplo, o fosfato de dihidroxiacetona intermediário é uma fonte de glicerol que combina com ácidos gordurosos para formar gordura. A glicólise ocorre, com variações, em quase todos os organismos, tanto aeróbicos quanto anaeróbicos. A grande ocorrência de glicólise indica que é uma das vias metabólicas conhecidas mais antigas.
