Na filosofia, potencialidade e realidade são princípios de uma dicotomia que Aristóteles usou para analisar o movimento, a causalidade, a ética e a fisiologia em sua Física, Metafísica, Ética e De Anima. O conceito de potencialidade, neste contexto, geralmente se refere a qualquer "possibilidade" de que uma coisa possa ser dita. Aristóteles não considerou todas as possibilidades iguais e enfatizou a importância daqueles que tornam-se reais por sua própria conta quando as condições são certas e nada as impede. A realidade, em contraste com a potencialidade, é o movimento, a mudança ou a atividade que representa um exercício ou realização de uma possibilidade, quando uma possibilidade se torna real no sentido mais completo. Esses conceitos, em formas modificadas, permaneceram muito importantes na Idade Média, influenciando o desenvolvimento da teologia medieval de várias maneiras. Indo nos tempos modernos, enquanto a compreensão da natureza implicada pela dicotomia perdeu importância, a terminologia encontrou novos usos, desenvolvendo-se indiretamente dos antigos. Isso é mais óbvio em palavras como "energia" e "dinâmica", mas também em exemplos como o conceito biológico de uma "entelequia".
