Entalpia
Enthalpy é um potencial termodinâmico definido, designado pela letra "H", que consiste na energia interna do sistema mais o produto da pressão e do volume do sistema: uma vez que a entalpia, H, consiste em energia interna, U, além do produto de pressão e o volume do sistema, que são todas funções do estado do sistema termodinâmico, a entalpia é uma função de estado. A unidade de medida para entalpia no Sistema Internacional de Unidades é o joule, mas outras unidades históricas e convencionais ainda estão em uso, como a unidade térmica britânica e as calorias. A entalpia é a expressão preferida das mudanças de energia do sistema em muitas medidas químicas, biológicas e físicas, pois simplifica certas descrições de transferência de energia. A alteração de Enthalpy explica a energia transferida para o ambiente a pressão constante através da expansão ou aquecimento. A entalpia total, H, de um sistema não pode ser medida diretamente. A mesma situação existe na mecânica clássica: apenas uma mudança ou diferença de energia traz significado físico.
