Nas estatísticas, uma hipótese nula é uma afirmação de que a coisa estudada não produz efeito ou não faz diferença. Normalmente, um experimentador molda uma hipótese nula com a intenção de rejeitá-lo: isto é, pretendendo executar uma experiência que produza dados que mostrem que a coisa em estudo faz a diferença. Um erro de tipo I é a rejeição incorreta de uma verdadeira hipótese nula. Com relação à hipótese não nula, ela representa um falso positivo. Normalmente, um erro de tipo I leva a concluir que existe um efeito ou relacionamento suposto quando de fato não o faz. Exemplos de erros de tipo I incluem um teste que mostra um paciente para ter uma doença quando na verdade o paciente não tem a doença, um alarme de incêndio desaparecendo indicando um incêndio, quando na verdade não há fogo ou um experimento que indique que um tratamento médico deve curar uma doença quando de fato não. Um erro tipo II é a falta de rejeição de uma hipótese falsa nula. Com relação à hipótese não nula, representa um falso negativo.
