Fluorescência é a emissão de luz por uma substância que absorveu luz ou outra radiação eletromagnética. Também ocorre quando as moléculas estão excitadas para estados eletrônicos mais altos por bombardeamento de elétrons energéticos, como ocorre, por exemplo, nas auroras naturais, explosões nucleares de alta altitude e experiências de armas de elétron com foguete. É uma forma de luminescência. Na maioria dos casos, a luz emitida tem um comprimento de onda mais longo e, portanto, menor energia do que a radiação absorvida.
