Gapeworm
Um gapeworm, também conhecido como um verme vermelho e um verme bifurcado, é um verme de nemátodo parasita que infecta as traqueias de certas aves. A doença resultante, conhecida como "gape" ou "as fugas", ocorre quando os vermes entupem e obstruem a via aérea. Os vermes também são conhecidos como "vermes vermelhos" ou "vermes garfos" devido à sua cor vermelha e à conjunção procriadora permanente de machos e fêmeas. Gapeworms são comuns em galinhas jovens e domesticadas e perus. Quando o gapeworm fêmea coloca seus ovos na traquéia de um pássaro infectado, os ovos são tossidos, engolidos e depois defecados. Quando os pássaros consomem os ovos encontrados nas fezes de um hospedeiro intermediário, como minhocas, caracóis ou lesmas, eles ficam infectados com o parasita. A droga Ivermectina é freqüentemente usada para controlar a infecção por gapeworm em aves.
